Everything we do carries consequences, good or bad. When we eat carelessly, we are likely to gain unwanted weight. When we work, we earn wages.

The 6th chapter of Romans, verse 23 says the consequence of our sin is spiritual separation from God - death. You know that someone who is physically dead is not responsive to anything going on in the physical world. In the same manner, someone who is spiritually dead is not responsive to the Spirit of God.

22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
